Masonry Repair to Historic Building in Westminster

A period property in Westminster, which was built in 1860, has recently undergone extensive renovation.  The full makeover to Shepherds Market included brickwork repairs, replacement of lead flashing and roof slates, refurbishment of timber sash windows and a full decoration scheme to the outside.

Pryer Construction Ltd., the main contractors on the project, employed NBS Total Wall Care to propose a solution to the problem of cracked brickwork and failed pointing that had affected the main structure of the building over time, allowing the penetration of damp through external walls. This moisture had also caused damage to internal decorations.

In order to reinforce the brickwork and renew the defective pointing, whilst minimising the amount of dust caused, wall chasers with extraction-unit attachments were used. In total, more than 400m of Twistfix spiral reinforcement bars were used to complete the structural repair and stabilisation work in order to strengthen 25 brick arch lintels. The many cracks and voids throughout the property were repaired using a selection of our stainless steel crack stitches and professional crack filling products.

Newman’s were then able to produce a colour-matched lime mortar that was sympathetic to the original aesthetics and structure of the period Westminster terrace, using this to carry out the extensive repointing work.

Twistfix have recently extended our range of helical wall ties and crack stitching bars with a new selection of sizes to ensure the needs of any-sized project can be met. Check out our recent article for more information on the new size options and don’t forget that our skilled technical team are always on hand to guide you through the collection.
