Twistfix remedial wall ties have been used as part of an extensive repair project at Bonnington Power Station in Scotland. A large section of trench wall has been repaired and strengthened using the ties and the results have been declared ‘extremely satisfying’ by Scottish Power, who own and operate the facility.

Bonnington Power Station generates around eleven megawatts of power and has been in operation since 1927. The first commercial hydroelectric power station to be built in the UK, Bonnington generates its power from the force of the Falls of Clyde, which have a maximum fall height of over 90 feet. The dramatic waterfalls are situated in the Clyde Valley region of Lanarkshire just 30 miles south-east of Glasgow and 35 miles south-west of Edinburgh

The trench walls that run along the entire external length of the power station were the focus of the repair works. Upon opening and inspection of the trench, both walls were discovered to be in extremely poor condition; such was the extent of the damage that there was no option but to rebuild the wall furthest from the building. It was decided that the other wall could be repaired in order to prevent its removal which, as it would have involved the disconnection and subsequent re-routing of several high-voltage cables, would have been a costly and arduous exercise.

As part of the repairs, Twistfix remedial wall ties were installed by Castle Group Scotland Ltd, securely pinning sections of the trench wall to the wall of the power station behind. The stainless steel helical fasteners are extremely quick to install; simply drill a pilot hole, fit the tie in the SDS setting tool and drive the tie home to provide a mechanical dry-fix anchorage that exerts no expansive stress.

This tying process has restored the structural integrity of the trench wall at the facility, which is of great importance in providing an environmentally-friendly source of power to Scotland.
