Lateral restraint ties keep bulging or bowing walls in check. Each 8 mm diameter tie has a drill-like end that cuts into softwood. Use them for tying outer walls to the flooring structure.
Lift a few floorboards to find the joist level and ensure they run parallel to the wall. Locate hidden wires or pipes and avoid them during the installation. Insert the lateral restraints from outside a building through small drill holes. Screw the lateral restraint ties into two or more timber joists or studs using a drill. Use resin to anchor the masonry end and patch the drill holes. The insertion causes minimal disturbance.
The restraints transfer buckling wall loads into the main structure of a building. When screwed into two joists, the ties resist a pull-out force of about 10 kN. The strength of the wall fix will depend on the quality and thickness of the brickwork. Loads are likely to be between 2 and 7 kN. Install the ties at 600 mm to 1 m intervals along the wall to spread loads evenly. The restraining row locks the bulging wall in place.
