Basement Tanking Systems

Waterproof tanking creates a watertight barrier that blocks dampness and moisture. Use it to keep basements and cellars dry.

For new-build projects, build the tank on the outside of the structure. For cellar conversions, form the basement tanking internally.

What is the best way to tank a cellar or basement?

There are various ways to waterproof your home. Below are some standard tanking products that will keep your rooms dry.

Tanking Slurry.

A cementitious tanking slurry has cement, graded sands and chemical polymers. Mix them with water to form a slurry-like paste. Prepare wall surfaces and use an SBR bonding agent to prime them. Paint two slurry coats onto brick, block, masonry or concrete. Work the first coat into the masonry surface. The slurry soaks into porous masonry. Crystals form in the pores to block the passage of water. Apply the second coat at a right angle to the first. The tanking solidifies to create a Type A waterproofing barrier. The coating works like a dam. It holds back penetrating water and prevents it from seeping into basements.

Tanking Membrane.

Tanking membranes come in two main types. The first is a flexible sheet that bonds to masonry and concrete. It provides a Type A waterproofing barrier for underground walls and floors. When used externally, the tanking stops water from soaking into the building's fabric.

The second type is a cavity drain membrane. The studded sheet fits inside a building. The membranes manage penetrating water. Use them with channels and sumps to give Type C drained protection for underground areas.

Tanking Paint.

Waterproof tanking paints come in many forms. The liquid membranes bond to surfaces for a seamless watertight barrier. Use them to tank below the DPC level. They are also ideal for areas with constant water contact. Use waterproof paints to tank beneath tiles in showers, wetrooms and balconies.
